The timing chain should be good for the life of the car. You're thinking of a timing belt which isn't in the Q7. But, At 8 years it's time to replace HID bulbs and battery if they haven't already been done. Mechanically the Q7 should be fine if all scheduled maintenance has been done prior.

Audi UK recommends a cambelt change interval of five years or 140,000 miles, whichever comes first, for the above vehicle. This is to ensure optimum safety and performance. The cambelt is one of the hardest-working parts in the engine. Any component working this hard will eventually show signs of fatigue. The 1.4tfsi engine is an excellent engine with a good reliability record. With 150bhp it gives lively performance, and it’s cheap to run with good fuel economy, low insurance and low tax. If you want better performance go for a bigger engine, but the costs will go up.

The car is a 2012 B8 A4 Quattro 6MT and had 111k miles when the job was completed. The engine had the old style tensioner and was showing about 4-5 teeth. The cam cradle, timing covers (both), and spark plug tubes (mainly #3/4 had present oil leaks). The worst leaks being the timing covers.
Timing Chain Stretch : Affected VW and Audi Models – All 2.0t TSI engines. Timing chains are important to keep the top and bottom of the engine rotating together. The 2.0t TSI timing chains may begin to stretch overtime. Eventually if these chains stretch your engine can jump timing, causing catastrophic damage.

Re: RS6 Maintenance Schedule. Mark pretty much hit the nail on the head with his reply. You will never see 30k on brakes/more like every 15k and rotors needing replaced at every 30k. I also think a switch to Iridium spark plugs could extend that interval to say 35-50k. Buyer beware on the 3rd party warranties.

It is indeed a cam chain at the back of the engine on the 3.0 TDi and should never need replacing unless you have a major problem.

It was indeed the timing chain tensioner. Replacement part was different than the original, indicating to me that the original is a faulty design. If you do a search of all forums on "timing chain tensioner" you'll find that this is a recurrent problem on the 1.8T since as early as '96. In my view, Audi should issue a recall.

I current own a VW Golf 6 1.2TSI 66KW/88bhp variant. I've seen some of posts regarding 1.2 TSI camchain issues and what to look out for. I read one post titled "2013 1.2 TSI timing chain" saying that the chain design was revised in 2011. My car's production date was September 2011, and the car currently has about 75000km/46,000miles on the clock.
A timing chain replacement for a BMW costs between $1,250 to $3,500 (or £1,000 to £3,000). The costs can vary greatly based on your location, the model year, and the mechanic or dealership you choose. Labor costs: Mechanics charge by the hour, and this job can take several hours, especially if complications arise.
